A custom PVC keychain is one of the most fun ways to turn a drawing, logo or pet photo into something you can carry every day. Soft PVC is molded in raised, colorful layers, so a little preparation goes a long way. The good news? You don't need to be a pro designer. Here's how to set your artwork up for success.
1. Start with the best file you have
We accept PNG, JPG, SVG, PDF, AI and EPS files. If you have a vector version of your design (SVG, AI, EPS or a vector PDF), send that, because vector lines stay perfectly sharp at any size. If you're working with a PNG or JPG, upload the largest, clearest version you have. Aim for around 300 DPI at the final size, and skip screenshots or images that have been compressed by messaging apps.
2. Think in solid colors
Each color in a PVC keychain is filled into its own molded section. That's what gives PVC its bold, toy-like look. Solid, flat colors translate best. Gradients, soft shadows and photo-style shading are usually simplified into a few solid color blocks. If you have exact brand colors, add Pantone or HEX codes in your order notes so our designers can match them as closely as possible.
3. Keep lines and details bold
Super-thin lines and tiny details can be tricky to mold cleanly. As a general rule, keep lines at least 0.5 mm (about 0.02") thick at the final size, and leave a bit of breathing room between small shapes. Intricate textures like fur, hair strands or tiny patterns may be simplified. Bold and chunky almost always wins on a keychain.
4. Make text big enough to read
Names, initials and short phrases look great on PVC, as long as they're readable. Try to keep text at least 2 mm (about 0.08") tall, and choose a bold, simple font over thin script styles. Double-check your spelling before you upload. It sounds obvious, but it's the number one thing people wish they'd checked!
5. Give it a clean outline
A solid outline around your design defines the keychain's shape and gives it a polished, finished edge. It also helps hold thin or pointy parts together so your keychain is sturdy. If your design has long, skinny pieces sticking out, our designers may thicken or connect them for durability.
6. Think about the ring hole
Every keychain needs a spot for the ring. If you have a preference, like the top of a character's head or a corner of your logo, mention it in your notes. Otherwise, our designers will place it where it looks and hangs best.
7. Don't stress: that's what the mockup is for
After you upload your artwork and check out, our designers create a free digital mockup and email it to you, typically within 24-48 hours. You'll see the shape, colors and layout before anything is made, and you can request free revisions until it's just right. Production starts only after you approve, and takes about 5-7 business days.
